Chapter 12

Wow... I cannot believe this book study is over. This book, by far, has helped me so much more than most of the books I have read over the past several years. I had a meeting with my principal a couple of days ago and I expressed my love for this topic and the importance of each teacher reading it. I felt like she was receptive to this -- I sure hope so!

I enjoyed the Bill of Rights. And in theory, of course I agreed with all of it. Each one rang true to me, however, one in particular struck me as one of those...."Ok. Come on, you really do need to read this carefully!"
That one was: Gifted Children Have a Right to Learn Something New Every Day.

Can I say that each of my gifted children learned something new each day? No way. That just sticks in my heart right now. I think I will wake up each day and go to bed each night thinking of this right. Of course they should be learning something new each day. Otherwise, why are they at school? It is a complete waste of their time. And... isn't it my job to help them reach their potential? I feel like I need to put this on a poster.... and just say ALL KIDS have a right to learn something new every day. That will remind me of my #1 goal.

Another right that I think is important to remember is that gifted kids don't have to be good at everything. I often times hear teachers complaining about how their "GT kids are terrible" at one thing or another. We need to understand that these kiddos are like the rest of us... they will shine brightly in some areas and more dimly in others.

    Thanks for sharing with your principal. I would love it if more teachers read this and then you had that common language. Imagine how powerful PLC could be with this knowledge!

Chapter 1 - Introduction As soon as I read the title of the book, I knew this would be a helpful class! Chapters 6 and 7

Chapter 6 I think that as educators, we are sometimes a little too quick to judge parents based on their child's behavior. We must work together for the success of all students. When it comes to the underachievers, I think we should assume that parents are just doing their best and are probably every bit as frustrated as the teachers. So, let's do that. Let's work together to figure out what these kiddos need to achieve. As teachers, we have very little influence over what happens in the homes of our students. What we have to do, is get "buy in" from parents that we truly care about the kids and want them to succeed. We need to communicate effectively and responsibly from the beginning about strengths and weaknesses. Rimm's Trifocal Model is the perfect way to do that.
